Take the title of this one lightly. Obviously, to some level, you can teach this stuff, but you can only teach so much before there's nothing left to teach. In other words, you can sit down for 8 hours a day reading photography books, and by the end of it all you may be a master of knowing what each different part of your camera does, but once you hit the field it all becomes useless if you haven't practiced.
Learn the definitions and go out and practice. Memorizing your definitions is one thing, but to get a real understanding of what everything means you have to go out and practice your settings. I've said this before and I'll say it again. START ON MANUAL. No matter how hard it is you should start on manual so that you can have complete control of your settings. Once you have a better understanding of your camera then you can start moving into the more automated modes.
